Zojuist nog maar weer een blog aan de blogroll toegevoegd, nl. Marketing your library.
Dit blog wordt geschreven door Susan G. Akers. Als ik het goed heb is zij Marketing Communications Manager bij Ball State University in de VS.
Qua onderwerp is dit een aanrader, omdat ik bijna dagelijks merk hoe belangrijk het is om de producten en diensten van de bibliotheek te verkopen. Daarbij zijn alle middelen geoorloofd en is alle hulp welkom…
Voor EAHIL heb ik vorige week een groep aangemaakt in LinkedIn. Guus attendeerde me op Facebook, waar ook al een EAHIL groep bestaat. Soms vragen mensen mij wat LinkedIn nu eigenlijk is. Ik vergelijk het dan meestel met een online visitekaartjes site, waarbij iedereen zijn eigen kaartje bij houdt.
Facebook is meer een internationale Hyves, een populaire site waar alles en iedereen op zit. Het gebruik van Facebook of LinkedIn lijkt soms ook mede geografisch bepaald. In Scandinavië zijn er voor zover ik dat kan inschatten meer Facebook gebruikers.
Via iLibrarian vond ik een mooi filmpje over LinkedIn, wat het nu eigenlijk is en wat je er mee kunt. Zijn wij al met elkaar connected?

During EAHIL two very interesting (funny) video’s came by. The first one presented by Heather Todd from the University of Queensland, Australia.
Heather Todd presented us with “The Chronicles of Library Man“.
The second video was presented by Vicky Grant from the University of Sheffield.
The video was made by student to promote the Information Commons.

Dinsdagavond was het eerste sociale treffen van het EAHIL congres, nl. een concert in Temppeliaukio Church.
Op veel ansichtkaarten van Helsinki zie een foto van buiten genomen van de koepel van de kerk. De rest van de kerk zit onder de grond, uitgehouwen in een rots. Kortom een erg indrukwekkend gebouw, net als het spelen op het kerkorgel. Tsjonge, wat een geluid, het dak bleef nog net op de kerk zitten 
Het zingen van een heren kwartet en een solist, maar ook het spelen op een traditioneel Fins snaarinstrument door 4 dames, waren absoluut de moeite waard en maakte ook de hele ambience in de kerk heel bijzonder.
Het leuke van dit concert is dat je na de cursussen, nu eigenlijk voor het eerst bijna alle congresgangers ontmoet. Er zijn al best veel Nederlandse bibliothecarissen, maar daarnaast is het ook erg leuk om alle bekende EAHIL collega’s uit heel Europa weer te zien.
Tuesday afternoon was the hands-on course by Guus van den Brekel and Dorine Kieft-Wondergem (UMCG) . All Continuing Education Courses (CEC) were in the National Library of Health Science Terkko.
Upfront I had the idea that by following this course I could learn more in this one afternoon then when I would have tried everything by myself for weeks. At the end of the course I was happy that I had chosen this course. I don’t know everything now, but the course has given me more insights, possibilities and consequences to think thoroughly about and that is what this whole conference is about for me. Exchanging knowledge and experiences with collegues and friends.
So what was the course about? Guus and Dorine set 5 rules for this course:
- a practical approach;
- learn from eachother;
- can do all these things;
- pragmatic basis;
- keep on learning.
After a short introduction by all participants we went on with the main focus of this training “power to the user (and the librarians)”. It is all about visibility of the library. There are so many tools out on the web, ready for everybody to use. These tools are webbased so you don’t need your IT department. (Everybody YEAH!!!! 
Libraries should go and get out on the web, were the users are. Even making libraries services portable as many users now have portable devices.
Examples of these tools are toolbars which Guus has made for many EAHIL libraries. There is even an EAHIL toolbar available!
The rest of the course focussed on Netvibes. Netvibes is the ideal and free tool for making a personalized information page for the library and all of its users, by getting a so called ‘Universe’. (You can find an example of the UMCG universe here). Netvibes can not only be used for reading and collecting RSS feeds, but also for saving bookmarks and links to sites of interest. Favorites don’t travel and are not updated. When using a webbased tools like netvibes they do!
You also have the possibility to include widgets, ie. a searchbox for searching PubMed, or a link with Facebook. By picking the widgets you want you can build your own personal page.
Guus and Dorine build a universe for EAHIL 2008. (You can also find more information on the course on that site. During the course the participants have suggested several enhancements, new widgets etc. Please feel free to contact Guus or Dorine eahil2008 [at] gmail.com to pass on more ideas, tips etc.
Een nieuw weblog toegevoegd aan mijn blogroll, Metalogue. Uit de introductie:
I’m Karen Calhoun, Vice President of WorldCat and Metadata Services at OCLC. Some OCLC colleagues and I have joined together to launch Metalogue, a new blog devoted to cataloguing and metadata topics around the world. Dit kan wel eens een heel interessant blog worden, net als die van haar collega, Lorcan Dempsey.
