During meetings were I present Summon, I sometimes get questions about thin and thick metadata. The first time it accurred I was very surprised. During my long career as a librarian, keeping up to date with all the latest literature, blogs, tweets and trends, visiting many international library conferences, I never had heard of thin nor thick metadata.
I know there are different sorts of metadata; bibliographic, like author and title; but also annotations, keywords, MeSH etc. But what is thin or thick???
In a recently published IFLA report Metadata Decisions for Digital Libraries Survey I have searched and found nothing.
Apperently (my conclusion) some vendors have come up with a marketing idea about thin and thick metadata, but I still have no idea what it is. To me it is just more blabla. If you know the answer please share it via the comments.
